A true cultural center for our city and state, UAB’s Alys Stephens Center continues expanding its bounds while remaining true to its mission of being a place where the entire community experiences and engages the arts.
Since 1996, the ASC has been one of the Southeast’s premier performing arts centers, presenting and producing the world’s best artists in music, dance, theatre, comedy, film and family entertainment. More than just a stage for presenting programs, the Alys Stephens Center is a community arts classroom, laboratory, and public forum for the state. We enjoy bringing the community together to spark important conversations through the arts as evident with curated events such as the ASC Nite Market, Light Dreams, and the commissioned work A More Convenient Season.
“The ASC’s fearless arts programming allows us to respond to what is going on in the world and give the Birmingham community arts performances that are relevant. To curate programming at the Alys Stephens Center means we create and oversee performances that are original, that are not represented anywhere in the world. I am so grateful that UAB Vice President Dr. Shirley Salloway Kahn, UAB President Dr. Ray Watts, UAB Health System CEO Dr. Will Ferniany, and others at the university are so supportive of the ASC and that they share the vision to take the ASC to a level of national prominence as a performing arts center,” says Theresa Bruno, chair of the ASC corporate board.
The ASC houses four superb performance venues to experience these innovative arts experiences, including the 1,330-seat Jemison Concert Hall; 350-seat proscenium-style Sirote Theatre; 170-seat Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall; and the Black-box Odess Theatre. Additionally, the ASC is proud to be the home of UAB departments of Theatre and Music and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.
The ASC also is developing the next generation of culture lovers through ArtPlay, it’s home to arts education and outreach which endeavors to educate, inspire, and nurture creative growth and self-expression in people of all ages by providing innovative arts education. To date, free or low-cost arts education programs have been provided to more than 70,000 children and adults through workshops, classes, residences, master classes, school shows, and more.
UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center is committed to presenting you the best in all genres of the performing arts while creating, curating, and commissioning bold, innovative, and meaningful arts experiences.
